History of our school

In 2021, our school celebrated 70 years of establishment and has a rich history as being one of the oldest buildings in George.

The school was established on 1 January 1951 with Mr. Ferreira as the first principal. The original building is still in use and currently houses the Grade One and Two classes. On May 6, 1952, there were 480 children in the school.

The small hall was originally the residence of the Schoeman family. It was built in 1848 and is the oldest home in George and therefore also a National Monument. The building was originally known as Schoemanhuis. It was converted into a boarding house which later became the school board building when the state took over the land. During 1992 the building was transferred to the school and converted into a school hall and music rooms.

The original Schoeman home now houses two of our Pre-primary classes, two music rooms and our Clothing Bank.

Our school song was written by Ms. Dalene Brits on 13 June 1988. The school quickly grew and expanded. From 1979 to 1995 some grades were accommodated in prefab classes. In 1995 the temporary prefab classes were replaced with permanent structures which became Grade 3 classes. The large school hall was built and inaugurated in 2002.

In 1983 the school started a Pre-primary class which has since grown to 7 classes. To date the school has more than 800 pupils.

School Anthem

Here at the foot of the Outeniqua
There is a school that we’re proud to name:
This is the school where we all can learn
To read and to write and to play the game.

Our aim here is to Grow
– In body and in soul –
To prepare ourselves for the life to come,
Set a target, reach our goal!

Our Mascot: Buzzbee

In 2021 our school introduced a mascot representing the buzzing and energetic spirit of the school. It will be seen at special team building activities for learners teachers, as well as at sports events and on open days.

Why a bee?

  • bees build their hives in trees and our emblem is a tree that grows.
  • bees have many positive characteristics
such as being hard workers, working together and being productive.
  • bees are an endangered species. We want to educate our learners about the importance of bees.
  • without bees, pollination will not be possible and therefore humans would struggle to survive. Thus, without a good educational foundation, intellectual and personal growth will be limited.
